The Guild
For all women within our community
About 52 years ago Overtown Church Women's Guild and Young Mothers groups decided to amalgamate and the Women's Group has being going strong ever since. We have always been affiliated to the Women's Guild of the Church of Scotland.
At present we have just over 50 members who mostly all attend each week - 10 weeks before Christmas and 10 weeks after. We have a very varied syllabus with speakers, demonstrations, outings, games nights etc. and have designated each night as an Open Night which means anyone can join us or bring along a friend.
Since the demise of the Men's Fellowship and even before, we have had many of the men in the congregation join us for musical nights or nights of a special interest to them.

Monday Bee
All are welcome
Can you knit, sew or crochet? or are paper crafts more your thing? Well what ever your expertise is or if you are wanting to try your hand at a new craft the Monday bee is the place for you. It is a group for anyone who loves doing crafts and making things whilst enjoying some company, good chat and plenty tea and coffee. Maybe you can come along and teach the group a new skill, anyone can pop along to see what the group are getting up to and join in.
Friendship group
Everyone is welcome
The group has grown from being a dream of church member R McDonald to now being a thriving group of people who enjoy simply spending time together. The group is set up for people who need companionship and allows a variety of people to get to know one another. The first week of the month the group goes out for dinner or lunch, no worries if you don't drive as there are plenty of drivers who are an offer people a lift. The group meet again the third week of every month in the small church hall for tea, coffee and of course cakes and scones. The group sits and talk together and catch up what is going on with each other and learn what the members can do for one another as the group know friends can help each other in many ways. The group also likes to do a bit of fundraising through the year and in the last 2 years have raised £5985 which has furnished the church with new pew cushions. The friendship group run the Monday lunch club in an effort to bring more of the community together. The main focus of the group however is not about fundraising it is and always will be that the members will be caring of each other and be available to give true companionship. Friendship isn't one big thing it's a million little things. If you are reading this and think you would like to join the group you will be welcomed wholeheartedly and if you require more information please contact Nancy Pollock.
Line dancing

Do you like to grapevine or do a jazz square? or are you wanting to learn? Each week people within the community who like to line dance meet in the church to show off their moves. Anyone can attend from beginners to advanced and enjoy a lively afternoon with a group of friendly faces.
Boys' Brigade
Boys ages 5 - 18
Here in Overtown Parish Church, 1st Overtown Boys' Brigade was formed in 1944 and we have a very vibrant active Company. We are part of Wishaw and District Battalion.
The Company is split in to three sections:

ANCHOR BOYS: This is for boys in Primary 1 to Primary 3. The boys enjoy an evening of craftwork, games and the company of other boys. All boys are encouraged to take part in everything and the emphasis is on them having fun and enjoying themselves. The Anchor boys entertain us with carol singing at our annual Christmas coffee morning and they enjoy an end of session treat which is usually to the ball park at M+D's. The Anchor Boys are the feeder section for the Junior section and a strong Anchor Boys is the basis of a strong Company. Many Queen's men have came right up through all three sections, including the Anchor Boys and they then return in a leadership role to help out as part of their Queens badge work.

JUNIOR SECTION: This is for boys in Primary 4 to Primary 6. As the boys are slightly older they enjoy a night of figure marching, achievements and games. They also take part in Battalion competitions, including indoor and outdoor football, scripture knowledge, singing, colouring in and mime. The junior section have an end of session camp usually to an outdoor activity centre and they are the feeder section for the Company section.

COMPANY SECTION: The Company section is for all boys in Primary 7 right up until S6. As the boys are older this is the most active section and life is very busy in a Company section session, it is certainly a lot more than just a Friday night. There are numerous Battalion competitions which the boys take part in including, table tennis, indoor and outdoor football, company quiz, scripture knowledge, badminton, cross country and swimming gala to name but a few. A typical Friday night consists of a fall in and opening service, drill, class-work, PT, games football and fall out and closing service. This of course varies throughout the session and we have been known to have more informal nights with some rolls and chips ordered in!!
One of the most enjoyable parts of the Company section programme is taking part in the national competitions. This is when we compete against other Companies from all over Scotland in 5-a-side football, national masterteam (quiz), table tennis, chess and badminton. This is a fantastic experience for the boys and we quite literally travel all over the Country with them taking part in these competitions. We have been very successful in the past. In 2006 1st Overtown won the Wishaw and District Battalion championship flag for the first time in our history and this is something we are striving to achieve again.
When a boy reaches 15 years old he is eligible for the second highest award in the Boys' Brigade, the President's badge and once this is achieved he can start work on the highest award in the Boys' Brigade the Queens Badge. This is a very prestigious award and also has to carry a recommendation from the Company Captain. It is very highly regarded in the world of work and is the pinnacle of a boys time in the BB. After that we invite boys to stay on as young officers and hopefully become full members of the Church.
We also go an annual summer camp and we have had some outstanding camps with memories that last a lifetime! We still talk about the great experiences we have had at camp over the years.

All new members would be made most welcome and any enquiries should be directed to the Company Captain, Gregor Mackie, 07837812977.
