Baptism
A Baptism (sometimes known as a christening) is an important event in the life of a family, and in the life of the church family too.
Baptism is one of the two sacraments recognised by the Church of Scotland, the other being the Lord's Supper (Communion). In the case of infant baptism the church expects at least one parent or other close family member
either to be a member of the Church or willing to become a member. In the baptismal service those adults profess
their own faith and promise to give the child a Christian upbringing.
Baptism normally takes place during the Sunday morning service in front of the congregation, the congregation also takes vows to nurture and encourage all young people in their journey of faith.
Amongst the promises made by parents and adults at their baptism is to become part of the Churches life, and for children this would normally mean coming to crèche and later the Junior Church (OkClub & BClub7) as they grow up, preferably accompanied by their parents.

Church membership
The worship and activities of Overtown Parish Church are open to all who wish to attend them. For those who are not formally members of the church and who wish to explore more fully the meaning of the Christian faith and Church membership, enquirers' classes are held regularly at various points throughout the year.

Funerals
Bereavement can be one of the hardest things we experience and a time we are asked to make many decisions on behalf of loved ones. The minister is available to conduct funeral services, and is more than happy to meet with family members and discuss a funeral or Service of Thanksgiving. There is no charge for the services of a Church of Scotland minister. Families should contact the minister or a local undertaker for advice. The minister can be contacted using the details on the contact us page.
